ECO HOUSE

ECO HOUSE

This project brief called for a home with performance and gallery spaces for a musician–artist couple. The site was located on scenic Yerba Buena Island, and featured sweeping views across the bay toward San Francisco and Marin. Most importantly, the house was to be designed with environmentally friendly materials, a minimized energy footprint, and grey water systems.

I see this as my best work from the class. The end result was an elegant structure that paid tribute to its surroundings, with spectacular views of the bay as the centerpiece of almost every room. The understated nature of the rooms provided a sense of calm that was part of my vision from the outset. And, in keeping with the stringent environmental considerations, I selected recycled building materials that lowered energy and raw material usage.
